Abstract

Background. In the modern history Federal Republic of Germany appeared to be the only country, which took the path of the repentance for the actions of the former authorities. The defeat of the Third Reich in the World War II urged the German society
to reconsider its political culture. The process of establishing modern historical memory of the World War II within German society, reflected in feeling of repentance, developed continually throughout German history. The debates concerning the components of the historical memory, the means of its protection and the possibilities of further transformations, are taking place even now, however, it is its fundamental premise in all spheres of the German society that stays crucial. The objective of the research is to analyze the status and the stages of the development of historical memory of World War II in conjunction with the peculiarities of denazification policy.
Materials and methods. The realization of research goals was obtained on the basis of analysis of historical documents: Yalta and Potsdam Conferences materials, Nuremberg and Frankfurt trials, legislative grounds of denazification policy, as well
as scientific literature, which mainly was published in German. The methodological basis of the research includes the principle of historism, which allows to analyze the process of transformations in the political culture of FRG after the World War II.
Diachronic method gave the opportunity to analyze the process of denazification policy in the historical sequence in the general historical context. Synchronic method helped to establish cause-effect relationship between events and phenomena,
which happened simultaneously not only in Germany, but in other countries. Comparative and legislative method let us compare the role of Nuremberg and Frankfurt trials in the political life of Germany and formation of its historical memory.
Results. The study found out historical conditions and tendencies of development of denazification policy, as well as examined its role in the formation of historical memory of World War II in Germany.
Conclusions. The analysis of historical sources and scientific literature allows to make a conclusion, that in FRG the historical memory of the World War II went through different stages of formation and became an idiosyncratic part of German culture. By 1985 the modern historical memory of the World War II and the system of its defense had been formed in Germany. “Guilt policy” or “sense of guilt” for the dark pages in German history were developing within the course of lengthy public discussions and with the establishment of strong civil society, which could resist renazificational processes within the country. Any attempt of reconsideration of historical memory causes activation and mobilization of the bulk of German society for its defense.
